The lake skirted by a 6.4 km road is the chief attraction. This artificial lake was dug in 1820 by the erstwhile collector of Madurai, Mr. Vele Leving. It is a star-shaped lake spread over 24 hectares. Boating and fishing are allowed. The lake glitters like sapphire embedded in emerald green. It is nice experience to stroll along the road or to row a pleasure boat. The boat service was opened to the public and tourists as well in 1932.
It is on the eastern side of the lake. A well laid-out park with exotic and native flowers, hybrid varieties etc. The flowers are even cut and exported. The annual horticultural show is held there is May.
Tucked away in the northeastern corner of the town, on the way to Kurinji Andavar Temple, the Chettiar Park is a charming place to stop by.
